The word ‘lesbian’ derives from the Greek island of Lesbos, home to the poet Sappho in the 7th Century BC. Mystery surrounds this mythical figure, but it is thought that she was the leader of an all-female ‘thiasos’ (loosely defined as a group dedicated to one aim or belief). This particular group was focused on education and, most curiously, preparing and training young women for the ritualistic aspects of marriage! It is Sappho from whom the term ‘Sapphic’ originates, referring to lesbianism - although this is not a particularly widely used descriptor.
Interestingly (despite the fact that they would admit to there being little supporting evidence), most historians seem to have dismissed the possibility of Sappho having been a lesbian herself. Much has been read into her many poems about Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of ‘love, beauty and sexual rapture’, where such prose as “You came and I was longing for you” and “Once again, limb-loosening love made me tremble; the bittersweet, irresistible creature” was commonplace in her dedication to Aphrodite. But the goddess of all things naughty was a hugely popular theme in poetry of the day, so historians have not interpreted her words as anything other than typical of the time.
